Pumpkin Carving 101: The Stoner Edition by Canna Queens (Contest Now Closed)

Updated: Oct 28, 2023

It's officially spooky season!

And what better way to celebrate than by combining our two favorite things: cannabis and pumpkins!

We at Canna Queens are here to help you elevate your Halloween game this year with our 3rd Annual Canna Queens Pumpkin Carving Contest.

With the contest already in full swing, we wanted to share some tips and tricks on how to carve or paint your pumpkin, as well as six stoner-inspired design ideas we're sure you'll love!

Whether you're a seasoned pumpkin-carver or a newbie, this comprehensive guide will help you unleash your inner artist and create a show-stopping masterpiece for our contest.

So sit back, light up a joint, and let's get carving!

Carving and Painting Tips

Carving:

  1. Choose the right pumpkin: Look for one that has a flat bottom to prevent it from rolling. You'll also want a pumpkin that's smooth and blemish-free to provide a nice canvas for your design.

  2. Use the right tools: A pumpkin carving kit will make your life much easier, but at a minimum, you'll need a serrated knife, a small spoon, and a pen or marker.

  3. Sketch your design: Draw your chosen design on the pumpkin using a pen or marker. If you're not confident in your drawing skills, download and print out one of the six design ideas below and tape it to your pumpkin.

  4. Carve it out: Start by cutting a circle around the stem to remove the pumpkin top. Then, scoop out all the seeds and pumpkin guts with a spoon. Once your pumpkin is gutted, it's time to carve! Begin with the smaller, more intricate parts of your design before moving on to the larger sections.

Painting:

  1. Clean the surface: Make sure your pumpkin is clean and dry before you start painting. This will help the paint adhere better and prevent it from peeling.

  2. Use acrylics or spray paint: Both of these types of paint are suitable for painting on pumpkins, but be sure to use a sealant afterward to protect your design.

  3. Get creative: There's no limit to what you can do with paint! Experiment with different colors, patterns, and techniques to create your unique masterpiece.

Six Stoner-Inspired Design Ideas

Joint: Carve out a realistic-looking joint with wisps of smoke trailing from the tip. Pro tip: Use toothpicks or skewers to help support the more delicate parts of your design.

Smoking Skull: Give life to a spooky skull, complete with a joint hanging from its mouth and wisps of smoke curling around its hollow eye sockets.

Lighter: Create a classic BIC lighter design, complete with a flickering flame. Top it off by carving the Canna Queens logo on the lighter's side.

Pot Leafs: Nothing says "stoner" like pot leafs! Get creative with your design by arranging them in a unique pattern or incorporate them into a scene.

Bong: Carve an intricate glass bong design filled with bubbling water and show off your skills by adding a detailed pot leaf or smoke cloud pattern.

Hand Holding Joint: Make a statement with a hand holding a joint design. Take it to the next level by carving out smoke rings in the background.
